FCCLA Members Attend District Leadership Conference
by Leslie Dohmen
Pierce High FCCLA members came together to attend this year’s District Leadership Conference on Wednesday, October 29, at Northeast Community College’s Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.
The theme for this year’s DLC was “Ohana Means Family, and Family Means No One Gets Left Behind or Forgotten.” When first arriving at the college, the state officer candidate from Pierce, Leslie Dohmen, went to take her FCCLA test, and the other members went to registration for the event. While most Pierce chapter members were registering, Madison Siedschlag, the vice president of Families First for the District 8 office, representing Pierce, went to help set up for the event.
During DLC, the members attended the opening ceremony, which consisted of the District 8 officers being introduced, the state officers being introduced, a keynote speaker, and the state candidate Dohmen answering a thought question in front of all of the members.
After the opening ceremony, the members went to different sessions about FCCLA and other sessions that focused on how members can be healthier. While these sessions were taking place, the creed speaker for Pierce, Elizabeth Harris, gave her creed speech. Also, Dohmen gave her speech for state office candidate and was asked interview questions about FCCLA.
After the members had attended two sessions and had lunch, the closing ceremony took place. At the closing ceremony, there was another speaker and awards were announced and prizes were handed out. At the awards, Harris received 2nd place for creed speaking and had to say her speech in front of all of the members in District 8. Also, Dohmen was elected to go on to state leadership conference as the official state candidate representing District 8. Pierce’s chapter also received 3rd place for their FCCLA scrapbook.
Before attending DLC, students in the school helped FCCLA members in donating items to Bright Horizons. Students brought anything from pots and pans to soap and gift cards. In Pierce, students collected 104 items and raised $20 in cash for donations. All of the donations were brought to DLC and were then given to Bright Horizons.
“I am very proud of our chapter members,” said FCCLA advisor Cheryl Timm. “We had the largest and most behaved group, and there was a variety of speakers and topics for everyone to learn something about family and consumer sciences.”
