FCCLA Kicks off Year by 'Coming Out of Its Shell'

FCCLA Kicks Off Year by ‘Coming Out of Its Shell’
by Leslie Dohmen

Pierce High’s FCCLA chapter started its year with a kickoff meeting at Pierce High School on Monday, August 24. The chapter’s theme for this year is “Come out of your shell with FCCLA.”

FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. FCCLA is an organization that is lead by students, and it prepares them for aspects of life like family, financial management, public speaking, meeting new people and traveling. FCCLA is mainly focused on family, community service, and building leadership.

When members arrived at the meeting, they came in, signed their name, and grabbed a packet that contained information concerning the dues they would need to pay for the year, what was going to be discussed that night, and what FCCLA stands for. Thirty-nine total members signed up for FCCLA this year, including officers.

When the meeting started, the officers introduced themselves: president Breane Hoffman, vice president Shelby Ronspies, secretary Mariah West, treasurer Desirea Druyor, historian and District 8 representative Madison Siedschlag, public relations chairperson Leslie Dohmen, community service chairperson Ellie Peters, Power of One chairperson Sydney Slater, and STAR chairperson Stephanie Rinkel. Then, all members went into the gym and participated in an icebreaker activity; after the activity, nachos were provided.

After everyone was done eating, all of the officers talked about the activities that the members participated in last year. President Breane Hoffman then explained when dues need to be paid and when the next official meeting will take place. The meeting was then adjourned with one last activity for the night.

“The officer team prepared well and practiced for the meeting,” said Cheryl Timm the FCCLA advisor. “It went very well.”

FCCLA’s first official meeting will take place on Monday, September 14.
