Six Qualify for State Journalism

Six Qualify for State Journalism

by Alyson Garcia

Pierce High’s journalism class members submitted samples of their yearbook and newspaper work to the NSAA’s state journalism contest. After preliminary judging, six students qualified for state finals.

Qualifying were the team of Kelsi Svendsen, Krystina Schuett, and Amanda Hammer in Yearbook Theme Development. Shianna Oestreich and Emily Simmons both qualified in Yearbook Sports Feature Writing. Alex Retzlaff qualified in Sports News Coverage.

Svendsen, Schuett, and Hammer’s qualifying entry placed 8th for their theme “Get the Big Picture.” The layouts, as well as the cover, for this yearbook theme were created by Svendsen, and Hammer’s softball yearbook page and Schuett’s homecoming yearbook page designs helped complete the entry.

Placing 9th in Sports News Coverage was Retzlaff for his news story, “Close Victory for Bluejays.

Placing 10th in Yearbook Sports Feature Writing was Simmons for her writing on the yearbook’s cross country page, followed by Oestreich who placed 11th in the same event for her writing on the girls’ golf yearbook page.

State journalism is divided into two classes, A and B. Thirty-one schools were in class B, including Pierce. The NSAA judges chose the top 12 in each category during the preliminary round, and now those top 12 competitors advance to the final round which will be held at University of Nebraska-Lincoln on April 27th where they will be given a same task related to their event. Placing will be chosen based on those results.

Journalism teacher Melissa Legate said, “I was excited to have so many entries to qualify for finals. The students do great work throughout the year, and they deserve to be recognized for that.”
