The PHS band performed a concert on Monday, March 23. The concert consisted of 13 songs. At this concert the junior high, senior high, and jazz bands were all showcased.
The concert started off with the junior high band, who performed four songs. These included, “Pinnacle” by Rob Grice, “Images of Ireland” by Brian Balmages, “A Sailors Odyssey” by David Bobrowitz, and “Brass in the Basement” by Larry Neeck.
Playing for the crowd right after the junior high band was the high school jazz band. They started off on a good note with a piece titled “Don’t Get Sassy” by Jones/Carubia. This piece featured Kristin Arens on piano, Bryce Bierman on alto sax, and Rachel McGill on tenor sax. The second song was titled “A Child is Born” which was also by Jones and Carubia. This song featured Breanna Attema on trumpet, Bryce Bierman on alto sax and Kristin Arens on the piano. “Grooved Pavement” by Victor Lopez was next and featured Breanna Attema on trumpet and Junior Aguilar on trombone. The jazz band ended their part of the concert with a piece called “Birdland” by Joe Zawinul, featuring Taylor Williams on the trumpet and Rachel McGill on the tenor sax.
The high school band played last and performed five songs. These were “Celebrata” by Ed Huckeby, “Children’s March” by Grainger & Wagner, the “The Seal Lullaby” written by Eric Whiteacre, “Ruckus” by Randall D. Standridge, which was an audience favorite, and then “The National Emblem” by Bagley Balent.
Band director Mike Sindt said, “I think it went very well. I am very proud of the music that all the students made. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite song, but they did as well as I have heard them play all year.”
The upcoming performance for junior high is April 11, at 3:30 p.m. for Pierce Honor Band. Another performance that features the entire junior high concert band is on April 18, at the Norfolk Music Festival. The jazz band’s next performance is April 24, at the district music contest. The senior high band’s next performance is on April 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the band room.
