Freshmen Explore Careers

Freshmen Explore Careers
by Alyson Garcia

The PHS freshmen students headed to Norfolk to visit Northeast Community College for a career exploration day on Monday, March 9. The students were among 900 freshmen from the area also at NECC engaging in exciting sessions, listening to keynote speakers, and much more.

Students arrived early morning and then headed off to sessions based on their career interests. There was much to choose from, from auto mechanics, to welding, to computers and graphic design.

Some students were able to take part in hands-on learning. For example, in the welding sessions, students would work in teams to complete a welding assignment. One of the students from PHS, Cody Brown, was among the few who scored the highest for his welding ability.

Students also got the chance to listen to speakers in some of their sessions; one of the speakers was a recent graduate from Northeast Community College and an old student from PHS, Abbie Johnson; she was able to speak to students who had an interest in drafting.

Accompanying the students at Northeast was guidance counselor Mary Birch. She said, “This year was very worthwhile; every student came home with a much better understanding, and it was one of the best years since we have attended. “
