Warbirds Battle at State

Garrett Wickett and Cody Yawn both participated in the 2015 State Wrestling Championships in Omaha on Thursday through Saturday, February 19-21. Wickett wrestled at 113 pounds and went 1 and 2 on the weekend; Yawn wrestled at 120 pounds and went 2 and 2.

Wickett battled in his first match against Jackson Bates of Wilber-Clatonia, falling 5:31 into the match. In the consolation bracket, Wickett defeated Riley Lake of Fort Calhoun by tech fall 4:31 into the match. Wickett’s final match ended with a loss Wyatt Allan of Wood River by fall 1:26.

Yawn won his first match over Bryan Sliger of Valentine by a 4 to 0 decision. In his next match, Yawn lost to the eventual state champion Wyatt Phillips of David City by fall 1:54 into the round. Yawn bumped over to the consolation bracket where he defeated Darryn Walters of Mitchell in a 4 to 3 decision. In his final match, Yawn lost to Vinny Person, the eventual third place finisher, of Gibbon in a 9 to 3 decision.

These final state matches brought the Warbirds’ season to an end.

Coach Tyler Legate said, “(At state) We were able to see the style and work ethic it will take to get to the top." He then added, "As a coach I feel I have grown a lot and understand what we need to do to get to the next level, and I think some of the guys on the team are starting to see the same things."
