Band Earns Superior at USD

Band Earns Superior at USD
by Emily Simmons

Traveling to Vermillion, South Dakota, the Pierce High marching band participated in the University of South Dakota’s Quad State Marching Competition on Saturday, October 18. Bands from other states such as Iowa and Minnesota came to play in the competition.

The Pierce band left bright and early Saturday morning and performed early in the competition as well. This year’s theme for the band’s show is Rock Pop and Hip Hop. The set includes the songs “Get Lucky,” “Pompeii,” and “Urban.” After performing their show, the Pierce High marching band scored a 73, earning a superior. Head Band Director Mike Sindt said, “They had a really good spirit. They played ‘Pompeii’ quite well and marched really well. I think playing in the dome was a really fun experience, not only to perform there, but also to see other bands play to become inspired.”

Sindt thought the band made improvements from its competition the week before. He said the band performs very well considering the little time they have to practice, but that they needs to work on balance from section to section, and that individuals need to work on basic marching styles because everyone matters all the time. He also said, “I think if the judging is similar this coming week, we should get a superior at state; that is our goal this week.”

The Pierce High marching band’s next competition is the NSBA State Marching Contest in Lincoln on Saturday, October 25.
