Robotics Team Competes in Norfolk
Robotics Team Competes in Norfolk

Pierce High’s robotics team traveled to the Sunset Plaza Mall in Norfolk on Saturday, April 12, for a robotics challenge against several local teams: O’Neill, Battle Creek, and Northeast Community College.
Melinda Ussery, Deavan Gehm, Derek Ross, Bryce Bierman, and Ethen Kuether represented Pierce at this daylong competition. Pierce’s robotics team was faced with the task of designing and maneuvering robots through a track meet. The discus throw, long jump, hurdles, sprints, and relays were just a few of the events the team was challenged with throughout the day. Before Pierce sent out their robots to compete in these events, the team had to program them to perform certain actions. When the programming process was complete, they sent their robots out to compete against others through the use of remote controls. Despite Pierce’s fresh ideas and steady work ethic during the competition, they did not land a top spot on the awards stand but still enjoyed their day of competing.
Freshman team member Derek Ross said, “We did pretty well, but we have room for improvement on our communication skills.”
This competition concluded the robotics team’s season for 2013-14, but with no seniors on the team, the upcoming years look bright.
