FCCLA, Foods and Nutrition November Projects Underway
by Kelsi Svendsen
As the holiday season approaches, Pierce High students are realizing that giving is better than receiving as they participate in their November projects: working on the Memory Tree, volunteering with Mercy Meals, and collecting for the food pantry.
The Memory Tree ceremony is on Friday, November 22, located just north of the Town and County Agency. This project allows community members to honor their loved ones who have died by hanging an ornament on the tree. Throughout the week, FCCLA members have been preparing for the upcoming event by putting the lights on the tree and posting a sign. They have also cataloged all the ornaments for the project and have already collected at least eighty ornaments for the ceremony.
In addition to the Memory Tree project, FCCLA members, along with the foods and nutrition class, have been volunteering for Mercy Meals by packaging food for the Philippines. The FCCLA members have already packaged 3,000 meals.
Finally, the FCCLA members are also collecting donations for the food pantry. This project is meant to challenge the FCCLA members to bring in food for people in need.
Sponsor of FCCLA and foods and nutrition teacher Mrs. Cheryl Timm said, “I think projects like these help students realize that there are people who need help everyday, and that their situations may not be as bad as they think. It helps students think about others in a different way and learn about the world outside their front door.”
