Lady Jays Run Rule Eagles

The Pierce Lady Jays Softball team played Lutheran High Northeast at home on Thursday August 23. They Jays won 2-10.

In the first inning, the Jays held the Eagles to no runs, but the Eagles struck back to hold the Jays to no runs. In the second inning, the Lady Jays went three up three down, with Abby Starkel pitching. In the bottom of the inning the Jays scored one run to take the lead 0-1. Top of the third inning, the Lady Eagles scored two runs to take the lead by one. With the Lady Jays up to bat, they scored three runs to take back the lead, 2-4. In the fourth inning, the Lady Jays held the Eagles to no runs, but the Jays weren’t done yet. They scored one more run to widen the lead. The fifth inning both teams played great defense with neither team scoring a run. The Lady Jays and Eagles both left one girl on base. The sixth inning brought the Lady Jays five more runs to seal the victory and win the game, while holding the Lady Eagles to no runs in the sixth. The Lady Jays won over the Lady Eagles 2-10.

Sophomore Rachelle Tucker said, ”We had a very good performance for our home crowd.”

Jacy Bretschneider had one single; Hannah Higgins had one single; Rachelle Tucker had two singles; Maddie Jenkins had one single; Ali Johnson had two singles; Synthia Schuett had one single.

Girls Golf’s first meet

The Pierce Girls Golf team played in the Wayne meet on Friday, August 24th.  The team placed 3rd out of eleven teams that competed.

Sophomore Kelsi Svendsen placed 8th with a score of 115. Sophomore Kim Carlson was 15th with a 121 and Sophomore Breanna Attema was 20th shooting 125. The team’s score was 480.

Coach Larry Hoefener said, “It was a great opening meet performance.  Bailey Tinker had a very good back nine in her first year of golf.” He went on to say, “The team really competed hard today.  They stayed focused not letting a bad hole ruin the next one.” He also said the team needs to “continue the emphasis on the short game.”  

The team took five girls and those girls were Kristen Albrecht, Kelsie Svendsen, Kim Carlson, Bailey Tinker, Breanna Attema. Their next meet is Thursday the 30th at Atkinson.

 

Bluejays defeat David City Scouts

Pierce High’s football team played the David City Scouts Friday, August 24th. The Bluejays won 41-0.

To open up the 2012 football season the Pierce High football team traveled to David City to take on the Scouts last Friday night. In the first quarter, senior Trent Spieker had rushing touchdowns of 22 yards and 23 yards respectively.  The kick after the first touchdown was missed and the try for 2 after the second touchdown also failed.  At the end of the first quarter it was Pierce 12 and David City 0.  The only score in the second quarter was also with the swift feet of Trent Speiker on a 36 yard jaunt.  Senior Nate Meier then ran in the try for 2 which made the halftime score 20-0.  In the third quarter Nate Meier exploded on a 67 yard touchdown run and senior Lucas Osborn nailed the PAT to give Pierce a 27-0 lead.  To add to Pierce’s offensive showing, sophomore Dillon Dickey had a nice 25 yard touchdown run and again Lucas Osborn hit the PAT.  The score at the end of the third quarter was 34-0.  In the fourth quarter it was Dillon Dickey getting the final touchdown of the game on a 12 yard run.  Lucas Osborn kicked the extra point.   At the blow of the last whistle, the score read 41-0, Pierce being on the upper hand.  

Individually for Pierce offensively Nate Meier had a 155 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards for a total of 173 yards, a touchdown and extra point run.  Trent Spieker had 100 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.  Lucas Osborn kicked 3 extra points and caught 2 passes for a total of 15 yards.  Lucas also had an average kickoff of 48.7 yards.  Dillon Dickey had 74 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensively for the Bluejays senior Aaron Hanlin had 3 unassisted tackles and 6 assisted tackles and had 2 sacks.  Seniors Dillon Ronspies, Trent Spieker, and Eddie Francois all had 7 total tackles each on the night.  Dillon Dickey had 6 tackles and senior Matt Lukens 4 tackles and a sack.  Seniors Zach Fehringer and Trent Spieker also had a fumble recovery each.

All in all a very good outing for the opening night of football season for Pierce High School.  The next game is the first home game of the season Friday, August 31st at 7pm against the Boone Central Cardinals.  

Lady Jays Take Third

The Pierce Lady Jays softball team participated in the Wisner-Pilger invite Saturday August 25. The Jays placed third. The Jays played Central City, O’Neill, and Wisner-Pilger.

The first game of the day the Lady Jays played Central City winning 12-5. In the first two innings the Jays scored four runs and held Central City to no runs with Abby Starkel pitching. Jacy Bretschneider batted first and hit a homerun giving the Lady Jays momentum. Later in the inning Maddie Jenkins hit a homerun. In the third inning, the Jays scored one more run and Central City scored two runs. The fourth inning both teams played great defense with neither team scoring. With the score 5-2 and the Lady Jays on top, they head into the fifth inning. The Lady Jays weren’t done scoring four more runs and holding Central City to no runs, Branigan Stonacek hit a homerun to score two runs in. In the sixth inning the Lady Jays scored three mores runs. With Central City last up to bat the Lady Jays knew they needed to play good defense. Central City only scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Jays won the game 12-5.

In the second game, the Lady Jays played O’Neill, losing 1-4. The first two innings both teams scored no runs, but left girls on base. Rachelle Tucker pitched. The Lady Jays only scored one in the fifth inning. O’Neill scored three in the last two innings leaving the Lady Jays with their only loss of the tournament.

In the battle for third place the Lady Jays played Wisner-Pilger winning 10-9. In the first inning, with Rachelle Tucker pitching, the Jays went three up three down. The Lady Jays up to bat, Jacy Bretschneider got on base, but doesn’t get around. In the second inning the Jays scored three runs leaving one girl on base. The Wisner-Pilger Gators scored one run in the inning. With the Lady Jays on top, 3-1, they did not score in the third and fourth inning, but the Gators fought back scoring one run in the third inning and one run in the fourth tying up the game, 3-3. In the fifth inning, the Jays scored five runs making the score 8-3. Maddie Jenkins hit a homerun to score three of the five runs. The Gators scored two runs to shorten the Jays lead. Going into the sixth inning, the Lady Jays scored two more runs. On the defensive side the Lady Jays knew they needed to hold the Gators. The sixth inning brought the Gators four run. Leaving the Gators short by one run. The Lady Jays take third place.

Sophomore Rachelle Tucker, “Despite many challenges we faced throughout the tournament, we finished well with our heads held high.”

Bretschneider had one homerun and two singles; Hannah Higgins had two singles; Tucker had one double and three singles; Jenkins had two homeruns, one triple, and four singles; Stonacek had one homerun and two singles; Ali Johnson had two singles; Synthia Schuett had three singles and one double.

Lady Jays Beat Cadets

The Lady Jays softball team played West-Point Beemer Tuesday, August 28 at home. The Jays won 4-9.

The first inning both the Lady Jays and West-Point Cadets went three up three down. In the second inning, the Lady Jays got into the groove and scored five runs. Brandi Sporleder hit a triple to score one run and Kayla Reinke hit a double to score two runs, making the score 0-5. On the defensive side, Abby Starkel pitched. She stuck the first three girls out in the second inning. The third inning, the Lady Jays hit the ball well but did not score, leaving two girls on base. The Jays held the Cadets to no runs. In the fourth inning, the Jays scored one run. Maddie Jenkins hit a homerun, giving the Lady Jays more momentum. The Cadets scored two runs shortening the Lady Jays lead. Going into the fifth inning with the Lady Jays on top, 2-6, the Lady Jays scored no runs. Defensively, the Jays held the Cadets to no runs and no girls on base. In the sixth inning, the Lady Jays weren’t don’t scoring yet. The Jays scored three more runs. Jenkins hit a single and two girls got home on Cadet errors. The Cadets scored two runs but not enough to snatch the victory. The Lady Jays won against the Cadets 4-9.

Junior Ali Johnson, “I thought we worked together really well and we had phenomenal defense, but I think we could hit the ball better than we did. All in all we played great.”

Jacy Bretschneider had two singles; Rachelle Tucker had one single; Jenkins had two singles and one homerun; Branigan Stonacek had one single; Synthia Schuett had one single; Sporleder had one triple and one double; Laurel Bailey had one single; Reinke had one double and one single.
