FCCLA Members Attend State Leadership Meeting
“Creating the Leaders of Tomorrow…Today” was the theme of the 2012 State FCCLA Meeting held in Lincoln, Nebraska April 2 and 3. Twelve FCCLA members, their advisor, and two chaperones from the Pierce Chapter attended the meeting events.
FCCLA members participated in a weekend of unique opportunities that challenged, informed, and motivated them, their advisor, and adult sponsors to explore opportunities through “FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience.” They examined new ways to help them succeed in their families, careers, and communities. The conference increased their awareness about areas such as career exploration, FCCLA programs, teen obesity, fitness, and leadership.
Throughout the meeting, members from the Pierce Chapter displayed their projects. Nicole Sullivan displayed her project “Spread the Word to End the Word” which is aimed at ending the use of the word ‘retarded’ and is sponsored by the Special Olympics. Nicole had pledge sheets available to sign, pledging to stop saying the word. Danika Wieting and London Sindelar displayed their project “Super Writers” in which they encouraged kindergartners to write.
During the meeting three members competed in STAR; the name stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition and it is a competitive event. Amy Venteicher competed in the Life-Event Planning category with a project on her graduation. She received silver. Nicole Sullivan competed in the Advocacy category with her “Spread the Word to End the Word” project. Nicole received silver and qualified to compete at the national meeting in Orlando, Florida, July 8-12. Melinda Ussery competed in the Recycle and Redesign category with a project titled “Dreams to Dresses.” Melinda made dresses out of pillowcases and will be sending them to needy Children in Africa. Melinda also received silver and qualified for Nationals in July.
