by Morgan Mattson

January 24, 2010

Pierce High’s FFA met on Monday, January 18 at Pierce High School. Fourteen members and six officers attended the meeting.

The chapter discussed FFA week and raising money for St. Jude’s. They also discussed the results from LSE- Leadership Speaking Event. LSE is a speaking contest where members choose a category and write a speech. They compete in the category and the best speaker wins. Melanie Bernhardt received a red in co-op, Cody Schulz received a blue in extemporaneous speaking, Lexy Nuesch and Morgan Siedschlag competed in the creed speaking contest; Lexy received a blue and Morgan received a red. Chelsea Asmus received a blue in interview and is an alternate for state.

The chapter also talked about proficiencies. In order to go to state, a member has to complete a proficiency application, which describes a project or occupation the member has committed to, its planning, costs and profits, and results.

Another topic discussed during the meeting was a community project to help the earthquake relief in Haiti. The Pierce FFA and FCCLA chapters decided to join and host a summer clothing drive as well as a night to go to the Orphan Grain Train and make food packages.

Secretary Melanie Bernhardt said, “The best decision from the meeting was to do Haiti relief, because it’s good to help other people.”

President Chelsea Asmus said, “Members learned what we will be doing the next couple months, and that proficiencies are important.”
