Three Pierce Youth In State Honor Choir
Three Pierce Junior/Senior High students have earned places in the semi-annual “Singing Youth of Nebraska” Honor Choir on January 30, 2010. This choir meets and performs on alternate years as the “Sing Around Nebraska” choir. The honor choir is different in that the students must audition, and only 120 of the finest seventh, eighth, and ninth grade singers in the state are chosen.
The Pierce students are Molly Harris, who is a freshman and sings soprano; Briton Rodenberg, an eighth grade student who sings bass; and Mariekel Blake, an eighth grade student who sings tenor. These students have been preparing the concert pieces before and after school with choral director Connie Jessen, who will travel with them to Holdrege. “They are outstanding young singers with great work ethic, and they will be fine representatives for Pierce,” said Jessen.
The concert songs this year will include “Festival Gloria,” arranged by Randall Johnson; a very entertaining Mac Huff arrangement of “Turkey in the Straw”; “Al Shlosha D’Varim,” arranged by Allan E. Naplan and sung in Hebrew; “Oy Es Dia De Placer,” arranged by Jody Noblett with percussion and sung in Spanish; a girls’ piece, “Sing for Joy and Clap Your Hands,” in multimeter; and “Tell My Father,” from the Civil War musical about a young soldier telling his father goodbye and leaving a legacy of honor. This last piece is arranged by Andrea Ramsey and sung by the young men.
The concert will be held in the Tassel Theater for the performing arts in Holdrege at 4:00 p.m. on January 30 after a day of group practices. Visiting conductor Cristi Cary Miller from Oklahoma, who composed the concert piece “Sing for Joy,” will be the director. The public is welcome.
