Hanlin Wins Government Day Essay Contest
Amanda Hanlin, a senior at Pierce High School, had the best American Legion County Government Day essay in Pierce County, according to a panel of six judges. Hanlin was among seniors from Pierce, Osmond, and Plainview, who visited and studied offices in county government on November 18 and then wrote essays about their learning and impressions from the day. She focused on the office of Health and Human Services as well as learned lessons that day about county government in general.
Hanlin said in her essay that the day was a positive experience in learning about the working of our county, and she said that she was impressed with the fact that “the Health and Human Services officers do everything they can to help our community through tough times.”
The judges, who had only numbers to identify the essay writers and no names or school identification, unanimously chose Hanlin’s essay as the best. For her efforts, Hanlin received five dollars from the Pierce American Legion for having the best essay at Pierce High and thirty dollars from the county American Legion for having the best essay in the county. Mr. Don Zimmer, chairman of the Pierce County Government Day Essay Contest, was at Pierce High on January 19 to present the award.
Amanda is the daughter of Kent and Suzanne Hanlin. Her government teacher is Mrs. Brenda Fleecs.
