Only forty-eight hours before B-4 District competition, the Pierce High Speech Team competed in the Mid-State Conference Tournament on Saturday, February 27. Eight speakers placed at Conference at Wayne High School, preparing them for the rapidly approaching district meet.
Three speakers were double medalists at Mid-State Conference: Amanda Hanlin, Katie Lockee, and Kaelee Stuchlik. Stuchlik was the only gold medalist for Pierce, the conference champion in extemporaneous speaking. She also earned bronze in persuasive speaking. Hanlin landed fourth in extemporaneous speaking, as well as sixth with Stefanie Koehler, Lockee, and Emily Polt in Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID). Lockee earned an additional sixth place with serious prose.
Other Mid-State Conference medalists included Micah Bahnfleth, Zach Halsey, and Jacob Jones. Jones took away a fourth in poetry. In humorous prose, Halsey finished fifth and Bahnfleth sixth.
Senior Amanda Hanlin said, “Our OID team worked very well together this weekend; we were in sync and competed nicely. Extempers also drew good topics and were able to write remarkable speeches.”
Speech coach Mrs. Crys Bauermeister said, “I think the conference meet turned out nicely. I was very proud of Kaelee Stuchlik with her extemporaneous speaking.”
Districts were held Monday, March 1 at Pierce High School, and qualifying individuals will compete at state on Thursday, March 18 at the University of Nebraska – Kearney.
