FFA Sponsors “Farmer Olympics”
Pierce High’s FFA Chapter held their annual Farmer Olympics on Friday, February 26. The Farmer Olympics was scheduled due to the generosity of Pierce’s students and staff; they raised $415 for Haiti relief. Their goal was $300. Sophomore Amy Fleer hosted the Olympics.
Teachers and students competed while the rest of the students and staff watched: seventh graders took on eighth graders, freshman battled sophomores, and juniors faced seniors. The men and women teachers competed against each other; the winning teachers then challenged the FFA officers.
All the competitors had to complete a relay obstacle course that included dressing like a farmer, licking a salt block ten times, carrying weight-filled buckets across the gymnasium, moving 6 bales of straw across a line, and lassoing a mock calf head attached to a bale of straw. The teachers had to carry out all of these tasks plus two: preg-checking a cow for marbles, and drinking milk out of a calf bottle.
The seventh graders beat the eighth graders, the freshman conquered the sophomores, and the seniors defeated the juniors. The men beat the women teachers; the FFA officers overcame the teachers.
Amy Fleer said, “I think the Farmer Olympics went well. The students looked like they had fun with it.”
