Eddy Sixth at State Wrestling
Kyle Eddy traveled to the Qwest Center February 18 through February 20 for state wrestling after qualifying for state with his third-place medal at the district meet. Eddy brought home a sixth place medal from Nebraska Class C 152 pound weight class. Eddy said, “I was glad to go to state my senior year and bring home a medal. Medaling was one of my goals, and I was glad I could achieve it.”
Eddy wrestled his first match on Thursday, February 18. Eddy wrestled very tough in his first match, but fell short in the end and was pinned by Travis Maresh of Central City.
Eddy won his first match of the day on Friday against Brandon Gayer of Arlington with a pin in 3:53. The win advanced him to the next round. Eddy won his second match against Jesse Richardson of Rushville by a pin to advance Eddy to wrestle another match Friday night. Eddy won his third match against Dillon Bates of Wilber-Claytonia on Friday by forfeit, and advanced to wrestle on Saturday.
Saturday, Eddy lost his first match, 3-11, to Travis Maresh of Central City. Eddy then went on to wrestle for fifth or sixth place. He wrestled tough in his last match against Shelton Mozena of Weeping Water but fell short and was pinned in the third period in 4:24.
Coach Ryan Stusse said, "Kyle wrestled his best matches at state. He lost a hard first round match against a tough kid. A lot of wrestlers would have lost focus after that, but Kyle stayed on focus and brought home a much-deserved medal from one of the tougher weights at the state tournament. I know sixth is not quite what he wanted, but I think when it sinks in that what he accomplished is pretty awesome, he'll be proud! I know I'm proud of Kyle! He's only the fifth Pierce wrestler to bring home hardware from state. That’s cool and a huge part of building our tradition."
