JV Grabs Third Speech Championship
Pierce’s junior varsity speech team has competed in three meets this year, and they won their third team championship for the 2010 season on Saturday, February 6. Both the JV and varsity teams competed in the West Point Central Catholic Bluejay Speech Invitational. A total of twelve junior varsity medals earned the JV their third gold team placement, while six varsity medals finished the varsity team fourth.
The varsity team achieved their highest placing of the year so far at the WPCC meet. Double medalist Emily Taylor earned a silver in humorous prose and a fourth in entertainment speaking. The trio of Micah Bahnfleth, Zach Halsey, and Jacob Jones finished third in Oral Interpretation of Drama, while the duo of Chelsea and Hannah Atkins earned a fourth in duet acting. For extemporaneous speaking, Kaelee Stuchlik took the gold, and Amanda Hanlin finished fourth.
The junior varsity team earned an astounding four championships. Marcus Blunck got the gold in entertainment speaking; Tad Fuchs earned the gold in his serious prose piece. Bahnfleth and Jones earned first in their JV duet, while Jones also placed first in poetry.
Other JV medalists included Bahnfleth, second with his humorous prose; Amy Venteicher also achieved second with her serious prose selection. In extemporaneous speaking, Katie Lockee took the silver, while newcomer Ashton Johnson took an outstanding fourth place finish at her first time of doing extemporaneous speaking. Amy Fleer and Venteicher were fourth in their duet acting, while Swara Fadnis and Elyssa Leach were shortly behind with a sixth place finish. Fadnis, Fleer, and Cady Reinke also earned a sixth in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Fleer earned an additional medal by finishing fifth in informative speaking.
Speech coach Mrs. Crys Bauermeister said, “It was really exciting to have better success this week. I hope it continues for the remainder of the season.”
Triple medalist, sophomore Amy Fleer said, “The JV team did very well this week. We still have a lot we can improve on, though. Varsity did well also; we are excited to have some of our JV teams move up to varsity. Overall, it was a good meet, and the team did well.”
