Three Track Athletes Make Academic All State by Miko Ferry
Pierce High’s students, Joey Koehn, Chays Ronspies, and Meghan Vogt have made Academic All State for track. They are all excellent athletes on top of being superior students. They were nominated by their track coaches.
Joey Koehn is in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and 4x400 relay. She is the top girl hurdler for Pierce, and she “has a strong anchor leg on relay,” according to coach, Melinda Martin.
Chays Ronspies is in the 400 meter relay and is sometimes in the 4x400. Martin said he is a consistent 400 runner.
Meghan Vogt is in the 400, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, and the triple jump. She is a solid competitor in all of her events and a consistent team point competitor, said Martin.
Chays says, “I have good grades and try to be a good leader in track.” Meghan says, “I maintain a 3.7 gpa and work hard in track.” Joey says, “ I work hard in school and track, and it was nice for it to pay off.”
Golf
Boys’ Golf Travels to Randolph and Stanton by Kara Polt
The Pierce High golf team traveled to Stanton on Friday, May 2nd and to Randolph on Monday, May 4th. At Stanton, senior Ryan Gaunt shot well and placed tenth.
In Randolph, the team golfed well and placed third overall at 389. Both Gaunt and Tyler Woslager shot their personal bests. Gaunt led the team and placed fifth with 75. Tyler Woslager placed eighth, shooting a 77. Fedor Schnupp shot an 86, Kody Kern shot a 96, and Tanner Brown shot a 106.
Coach Dana Schultz said, “We finally had a nice day for golfing, and the team had its season best at Randolph.”
The next golf meet was the district golf meet at Wayne on Monday, May 12.
Golfers Compete Well At Hartington Invite by Ryan Gaunt
The Pierce High golf team competed April 22 at Hartington on a beautiful day. The team placed seventh out of fourteen teams, and was led by senior Ryan Gaunt with a 74. Gaunt finished fourth, and was only three strokes off the lead.
The rest of the team had personal bests for the season. Tyler Woslager finished second on the team with an 89, Kody Kern shot a 93, Fedor Schnupp shot a 96, and Dillon White shot a 104.
Everyone on the team played very well. The team is looking to build on the good showing at Hartington, and come out playing well at Pierce’s home meet April 26. Tyler Woslager said “It was a very good day, and we all new we could score well and we did. We played the way we wanted to. The freshman on the team really stepped up, and hopefully it will give us a big boost for our home meet. ”
Boys Track
Bluejays Runner-up at NC Invite by Marque Van Fleet
The Pierce High boys’ track team were the runners up at the Norfolk Catholic track meet on Thursday, May 1. The Jays finished with 135 points, following the Knights with 166 points.
Two seniors were Pierce’s top scorers for the meet; Kevin Paulsen and Mack Baumann both finished the meet with 38 points, followed by junior Eric Koehlmoos.
Paulsen won the 100 meter dash in 10.8 seconds, followed by Aron Eddy second and Koehlmoos third. Brody Unger vaulted 12 feet even for first place in the pole vault. Lee Krohn launched the shot put out to 49 feet 7 inches for first place and also finished sixth in the discus.
The 4X100 relay team won first in 44.35 seconds. This team includes Eddy, Paulsen, Baumann, and Koehlmoos. The 4X400 relay team also won in 3 minutes 39.77 seconds. This team includes Cody Spreeman, Baumann, Koehlmoos, and Paulsen.
Baumann won the 400 meter dash in 51.69 seconds. Dylan Arens got second in the triple jump, followed by Jacob Navrkal, third. Spreeman finished second in the 110 hurdles, and Colby Jansen followed in sixth. Baumann got second in the 200 meter dash, followed by Koehlmoos. In the 300 hurdles Paulsen finished second, Spreeman right behind him. Matt Koeppe finished fifth in the 3200 meter run in 10 minutes and 42 seconds. Brock Stonacek jumped 5 feet 10 inches and earned fourth place in the high jump and also finished fifth in the long jump, followed by Dylan Arens.
The Bluejays will compete at the district meet at O’Neill on Thursday, May 8.
Girls Track
Lady Jays Take First Again by Courtney Schultz
Norfolk Catholic high school held its annual track invite on Thursday, May 1, 2008. The Lady Jays swept the competition once again and finished in first place overall.
In the high jump Heather Wachter took first place with a jump of 5’2”. Allison Hubert took third with a jump of 4’10” and Morgan Hahn took fourth place going 4’8”. In the long jump Tahnee Reed took second place with a jump of 15’11”. Reed took second place in the triple jump with a jump of 34’2.25”.
In the pole vault, Lacey Adams took second place, going 8’. In the discus, Cortney Keopke got second place, throwing 109’10”. Lachelle Milander won the shot put with a throw of 37’5” and Koepke got sixth place, throwing 34’.
Heather Wachter finished in third place in the 100 meter dash, clocking in at :13.00. In the 200 meter dash Brittany Spieker took fifth place with a time of :28.46. Meghan Vogt took third place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.27.
Joey Koehn swept the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of :15.8 and Kaelee Stuchlik got fifth with a time of :16.59. In the 300 IM hurdles Koehn took third place with a time of :50.82. Stuchlik grabbed fifth place with a time of :53.27 and Hubert took sixth place with a time of :53.75.
In the 800 meter run, Skyler Lippman took fourth place with a time of 2:39; following closely behind was Stefanie Koehler with a run of 2:43.
Kara Polt grabbed a second place finish in the 1600 meter run witha time of 6:10.98. Chelsea Atkins Finished fourth with a time of 6:17.22. In the 3200 meter run, Atkins fnished in second place with a time of 13:25.
In the 4x8 relay, the Pierce girls grabbed a second place with time of 10:32. Members of this relay were Lippman, Briana Adams, Polt, and Kellie DeJong.
In the 4x4 relay, the girls finished in a close second place, clocking in at 4:24.89. Members were Wachter, Stuchlik, Lippman, and Koehn.
The girls finished overall with 142.5 points, followed by Norfolk Catholic with 124 points, Wakefield with 73, and Stanton with 68.5 points.
Joey Koehn said, “It was a good thing to have people step up in different events.It was a really windy meet, but were still able to perform at our best and finish overall in first place.”
The next track meet will be the district meet in O’Neill on May 8, 2008.
Junior High Track
JH Mid-States Conference by Courtney Schultz
Battle Creek held the junior high Mid-States Conference track meet on Saturday, May 3. Pierce’s eighth grade girls finished fourth overall and the boys finished first.
In the girls’ shot put, Alyssa Blair took 7th, Nicole Eddy 14th, and Victoria Dannar took 20th. Blair was 9th in the discus and Eddy took 18th. In the pole vault, Ciera Henery took third place.
In the long jump, Ellie Pytleski took 9th, Timaree Reed took 10th, and Tori Pospisil took 14th. Reed was fifth in the triple jump, Katie Lockee was 9th, and Pospisil was 11th. Lockee took 4th place in the high jump.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Morgan Hoferer took 5th place, Reed was 6th, and Lockee got 8th. In the 195 hurdles, Reed stole first with a time of :32.18. Hoferer and Lockee got 8th and 9th respectively.
Brooke Guenther got 5th in the 100 meter dash, Payton Wragge got 11th and Pytleski got 15th. In the 200 meter dash, Guenther got 6th place, Sam Asmus got 17th, and Eddy got 21st. In the 400 meter dash, Sam Grome got 10th, Asmus got 18th, and Dannar got 21st.
The girls’ 4x100 meter relay got 3rd place, and the 4x400 meter relay got 2nd with a time of 4:47.9. The girls finished 4th overall with 42 points.
In the boys’ shot put, Shane Thayer got 8th place, Mason Rohrich got 10th, and Alek Flesner got 13th. In the discus, Thayer got 2nd, Flesner got 7th, and Eric Hoffmann got 11th.
Shelton Dvorak got 3rd place in the pole vault, Blake Douglass got 6th, and Marcus Blunck got 8th. In the high jump, Jarold McWilliams, Connor Reed, and Colby Johnson all tied for 13th place.
Austin Koehlmoos got 2nd place in the long jump, Zach Mayfield got 5th, and Johnson got 17th. In the triple jump, Reed took 3rd place, Nick Slinkard took 15th, and Thomas Tucker took 21st.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Katlin Ruppert stole 1st place with a time of :15.39 and Tyler Lindsay got 2nd with a time of :15.70. In the 195 hurdles, Ruppert also took first with a time of :27.37; Lindsay got 5th and Reed got 7th.
Koehlmoos won first in the 100 meter dash with a time of :11.80; Brandon Freeman got 11th and Blunck got 21st. In the 200 meter dash, Koehlmoos also got first with a time of :24.87; Freeman got 8th place and Blunck got 21st.
Shelton Dvorak finished in first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of :57.80 and Lindsay got 3rd place. In the 800 meter run Colby Huff got 3rd and McWilliams got 4th. In the 1600 meter run, McWilliams was 3rd; Blake Douglass took 5th place.
The boys’ 4x100 meter relay won first place with a time of :48.10. And the 4x400 meter relay also took first with a time of 3:51. The boys finished in first place overall by a long shot; the second place team had 60 points.
