Flagline Tryouts Held

by Danielle Tucker

May 01, 2008

During the week of April 21-25, eighth through eleventh grade students are welcome to try out for the high school’s flagline. Tryout practices are held every morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. in the high school multipurpose room. All participants must perform one short routine that will be learned on Friday morning, April 25, one longer routine from next year’s show that will be learned throughout the week, and one toss combination.

Monday morning, April 21, the participants focused on basic flagline technique such as the correct way to hold a flag, how to do a drop spin, basic marching technique, and other relevant information. After becoming acquainted with the flagline basics, the participants learned a short routine to “Hail Varsity.”

For the rest of the week, participants will continue to review basic technique and will begin to learn a portion of next year’s halftime performance. Tryouts will be held Friday morning in the high school’s multipurpose room. In groups, the participants will perform their three tryout requirements: one short routine, one long routine, and one toss combination. Judges at the tryout will be Mike Sindt, Jamie Zimmerman, Terri Haselhorst, and various seniors from last year’s team. Judges will look for facial expressions, skill level, ability to learn, sharpness, and many other qualities.

The 2008-2009 flagline will be announced Friday, April 25, after tryouts. Pierce’s flagline performs at halftime of home football games and at marching band competitions.
