The twenty members of Pierce High’s jazz band met with their director, Mr. Michael Sindt, early Tuesday morning, March 11, to review their three contest pieces before leaving at nine o’clock for their second jazz band festival, which was held at the University of South Dakota (USD) in Vermillion.
Out of the twelve other 2A bands that Pierce competed against, Pierce grabbed a third-place finish and received superiors from all three judges. Pierce also received a number of awards. Joe Fehringer, Zack Bresler, Ashlyn Doerr, and Jon Canaday were awarded outstanding performance awards as was the saxophone section.
After their performance, the band members were able to watch other jazz band performances, which was sophomore Emily Taylor’s favorite part of the day.
The trip wasn’t as long as some of the students had hoped for. After watching only a few bands, the students left to eat lunch and then returned to Pierce High.
All in all, the students had a good time, and Josh Chavez said he really enjoyed getting out of school for most of the day.
Sophomore Joe Fehringer said, “I think we improved on a lot of things, but there’s still plenty of room for more improvement. It’s always a fun time at USD.”
Mr. Sindt said he thought that Pierce’s third-place finish was “outstanding.”
