Pierce High choir members who were interested in joining jazz choir met on Wednesday, February 6. Topics discussed were practices, membership, and upcoming events. Sixteen members make up the jazz choir. They are practicing on Thursday mornings for six weeks.
The first event for the jazz choir will be the Jazz Choir Festival at Columbus on Monday, March 12. The festival clinician will be composer, conductor, and active performer Vijay Singh. He is Associate Professor of Music at Central Washington University.
Unforgettable and Moon Glow are the two songs Pierce jazz choir will perform at the Festival. Each school will have three breakout sessions where each group will perform its songs and receive critiques. Pierce High’s jazz choir breakout sessions are at 9:20, 2:00, and 3:30. Pierce’s last performance will be at 4:00.
Pierce High choir director Mrs. Connie Jessen said, “Jazz choir is becoming a great performance group for schools. It has more emphasis on jazz idiom and musical difficulty. We are looking forward to working with the director in Columbus.”
The jazz choir will also perform in the Choir Solo and Small Group Concert and Dessert in the Pierce High School gym on Thursday, March 20. Then on Friday, April 18, the jazz choir will perform at the District Music Contest.
